Dr. Bronner

There is far more to Dr. Bronner‘s than their Pure-Castile Soap, as a family brand it has a bizarre and interesting history beyond the cult philosophy that was once printed all over the label. Whilst the family soap can be traced back to 1858, it wasn’t until 1948 that Dr. Bronner‘s was founded and then later in the 1980’s that it moved from American health stores to the mainstream and then to the international market. Setting aside the ‘All-One!’ philosophy and company history, Dr. Bronner‘s makes some great soap and then some.

A certified organic, fair trade B Corp it packages its potions using 100% post-consumer recycled bottles for its liquid soaps. Donating profits to its supported charities and activist causes, including prisoner reentry programs, food banks and fighting the case for labelling GMO products.

Despite the impressive facts about Dr Bronner‘s my favourite thing about the company is the active promotion of utilising your soap for multiple purposes. Typically soaps are used for washing the face and body, with Bronner’s you can wash your hair too. And your car and your clothes and your toilet and your teeth, the list really does go on. Three times more concentrated than your average liquid soap they can be diluted and put to multiple uses – all to great effect.

With no artificial fragrances, dyes or whitener the soap is very moisturising, the trick being to perfect the balance of coconut and olive oil. Transparently they outline where they source their key ingredients with their Fair Trade around The World scheme. An advocate for fair pay the company operates under the following missions and principles;

  1. Work hard! Grow!
  2. Do right by customers
  3. Treat employees like family
  4. Be fair to suppliers
  5. Treat the earth like home
  6. Give and give!

Certified vegan, fair trade, not tested on animals, non-GMO and organic the ‘Peppermint Pure-Castile Soap’ ingredients list is fairly short and wonderfully simple:

Water, Organic Coconut Oil*, Potassium Hydroxide**, Organic Palm Kernel Oil*, Organic Olive Oil*, Mentha Arvensis (mint), Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Mentha Piperita (peppermint), Citric Acid, Tocopherol (vitamin E – sourced from sunflower seeds).

** None remains after saponifying oils into soap & glycerin.
